At Home Workout

full dvd set biggest winner
(Gosh, I want my arms to look like that…."They will…keep at it")
THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING!!
When I got home from work yesterday I waited patiently for Dave to get home so we could workout together.  When he got home he was tired as ever (worked 12 hours) and not in the mood to workout. I was a little bummed because I had already waited over 30 minutes and could have been close to done by then…but he said if I stayed home and worked out he'd hang out with my in the basement while I did it. Sounded good to me.  I popped in  the The Biggest Winner DVD (Full Frontal) and went to town.

I had not done one of these dvd's forever so it was really fun!  Compared to crossfit they are not as hard, but it was still a great workout!  Five minutes into the workout Dave came out and joined me. He decided he would feel better if he worked out, so we ended up doing it together! What a sport!  We were sweating our butts off! That Jillian, she is so….EMBARASSING in these dvd's. She's such a cheese ball it's almost hard to watch.  Dave goofed around during the cardio segments and tried to make me laugh….It is so hard for me to not laugh when he does that stuff, but it totally messes up what I'm doing if I break down and laugh.  He's a goof ball. After we were finished I had Dave take a few pictures of some of the exercises we did.  When he was done, I headed out side and ended with a 1 mile run around the block! It was wonderful. A few pics…

Chest Press

One Legged Squat (oh the concentration)

French Dips (That's what she called them, but I don't)

Push Ups

Side Leg Lift with Goal Posts

side lift with shoulder goal posts

Chair squats with shoulder raises

squat with shoulder raises

I don't know what these are called, but you start with you arms to your side and then bring them to the front
(as shown)

Those were about 1/2 of the different types of exercises we did…but it gives a good idea. Sorry the pictures are so blurry, he took them with his IPhone in the dungeon (aka basement).

I actually don't mind working out at home. I do like all the different types of equipment there are at gyms, but sometimes its kinda nice to workout at home.

When and (if) Dave and I ever move I'm not sure what we will do about the gym situation.  Right now we are members of the nicest gym in the world.  Maybe not in the world, but I swear it feels that way.  It is fully rocked on the outside and all the inside pillars or rocked and the beams over head or huge wooden beams, like a log cabin or hotel or something really neat. The atmosphere is that of a spa. Its so lovely. The equipment is all new and each machine has its own tv.  The locker rooms are another story. The floors are all slated along with the showers, which are amazing. The showers are bigger than my shower at home each with their own dressing room attached. I used to get ready there every single morning after working out and I LOVED IT.  They provide, lotion, soap, shampoo, conditioner, towels, q-tips, tampons, razors, hair dryers, shaving cream for men, mouth wash…EVERYTHING you can think of.  I love this place.

Wanna guess how much we pay each month?….. $16 dollars!  No joke!  We paid a one time $150 sign on fee (together)and then we only pay $16 a month and are on a month to month contract.  See why I love this place?  Its high class, but super cheap!  Anyhow, my point is, after living in such luxury, we aren't sure what we will do after we move.  This gym will be 20 minutes away and all though I love it, it is not worth the drive. There are several gyms in the area, but they are all way more expensive and compared to Cross Roads (that's the name) and they are CRAPPY!  We might make our own little workout area in the basement and just buy the things we need, but we will see how it goes! It would be fun to create a gym in our basement (it is unfinished)…notice how I keep saying "our basement"…we don't really know if we are going to get the house or not…but a girl can dream right?

I'm SUPER excited its Friday and can't wait to get off work and hang out with Dave. We, like everyone else in the world, love the weekends so much. I love spending entire days together and doing the things we love! I think we might be going to a matinee this afternoon! Any recommendations?? I hope you all have an AWESOME WEEKEND!

I plan on running 5 miles tomorrow! (Posting that I'm going to do it will motivate me to follow through) I think Dave will join me when I tell him about it!!  I'm super excited!! I'll let you know how it goes!! xoxoxo

QA: (I Have quite a few…pretty please answer them, I need some feed back on this stuff!)

Do you workout at the gym or at home?
Do you feel you get as good of a workout at home as you do at the gym?
How much does your gym cost? (I want to see what is reasonable, I realize $16 is super cheap)
Have you done "The Shred"..did you like it?
Have you tried PX90…did you like it?

    Great pics!

    To answer:
    1. I work out at the gym.
    2. I think I could get a great workout at home, but judging from training my clients, alot of ppl tend to slack off at home.
    3. I haven't paid for a gym membership in over 8 years since I'm a trainer, but I think it is about $49 a month? Classes included.
    4. Didn't do the Shread
    5. I've tried P90X, think it's great for some, but can injure others who are new to exercising.

I do workout at a gym, but still workout at home from time to time (last night). I quit the gym a while back because I was running outside so much, but then I realized I was slacking off and needed that extra push (of paying money) to get back into a regular workout style. My gym is only $20 a month because I am on a "family" plan with some friends. I know you only pay $16 but a $1150 sign up fee seems like a lot to me. I have heard of $100-ish ones, but maybe it's just because I live in a smaller town that the amount shocks me. I have done the shred and liked it but have never done p90x, but have heard great things about it.

I love Jillian's workouts. She is embarrassingly silly and giggly though. I always sweat like crazy and I love that.

I wish we could join a gym, but can't find a reasonably priced one, so I do a lot of DVDs, podcast yoga and yoga download, and a lot of running when the weather permits. I feel like I get a good workout out MOST days – but it does get harder when the weather gets colder. We also have a "garage gym" that my husband built for crossfit purposes – we have kettle bells, punching bag, a free weight cage, medicine balls, pull-up bar, etc. It's now always ideal – but it works.

    1. Love working out at home – with a 9.5 hour workday/commute – I gots to most days! Like to hit up the gym for classes (kickboxing!)
    2. Yes
    3. $46 a month, and since I prob go 4-5 times total I am most likely wasting a ton of money
    4. LOVE THE SHRED! — started it back in spring of 2008 and it has worked miracles for me!
    5. boyfriend actually just got P90X in the mail TODAY — I kid you not!!! I will prob be tracking his progress on the bloggie ;) oowwww owwwww! (oh and too funny, guy at work just told me he has been doing it for 38days and loves it. I may have to give the yoga/kickboxing sessions a whirl :) )

Have a great friday with your man girlie!!!

I have a gym at my apartment complex, but I only use it for cardio (if I'm not running outside or on a bike ride). I use Jillian's 30 Day Shred and No More Trouble Zone DVDs for weights. She has changed my body!

Hey Nat, just wanted to say that I think a home gym works if you stay dedicated (which I think you are.) My husband is so consistent and he works out almost every day in our basement gym. It's just a room with a treadmil, stair stepper, big weight machine and free weights (and a speed bag.) He does P90X in there and loves it. I tried P90X and I think it's really good but very LONG! If I know my workout is going to take me an hour and 20 minutes I'm not as motivated to do it. Also, you will find in years to come that it is really hard to do it at home with KIDS! Someone always needs your attention and you can not really concentrate. So you would still have to do it early in the morning. good luck!

Love your blog! I can really relate to you!

    1. I mostly work out at the gym, but do some workouts at home.
    2. I like both workouts. It really depends on my mood and motivation level.
    3. I actually work part time at my gym, which gives me a free membership! It's a super expensive membership.
    4. I did the shred this summer. I liked it and noticed some changes, but my weight was going up. I've since stopped weighing myself, but I've found myself deciding to do other workouts instead for some reason!
    5. no pX90 for me.

  8. Morgan @ Life After Bagels on 2009.10.23

I workout mostly at the gym, since I don't have any supplies at home. I think I paid like $30 a month. We paid upfront and luckily got my bf's corporate discount at Goodlife.

I like both, but have been spoiled by the amazing gym my dad works at in Manhattan, so I prefer at home if I only have access to a dinky gym (run on sentence much?)
Between on-demand, youtube and other videos you can find online, I can always get in a great workout, plus I can always run or ride my bike!
I found the Shred to be really disappointing. I know people raved over it, but it just wasn't long enough for me. I have a copy of P90X from a friend, and I do like the workouts, but don't do the whole program!

$16/month?! Holy moly! I recently bought a condo that has a fantastic gym in the building, so I am no longer paying for a health club membership… but before that, I was paying $90/month! In some ways, seeing the money fly out of my account was motivation enough to hit the gym, though. :-)

Even with the gym downstairs, from time to time, I'll break out a Pilates or 30 day Shred. JM is totally cheesy in those dvds, but the workout definitely IS a workout.

Thanks for another great post! Glad I recently happened upon your blog!

  13. Menden @ Skinny Menny on 2009.10.23

You go girl with the @ home workout! That gym you belong to sounds lovely :) I pay about 4x more a month for my membership, and it doesn't sound anywhere near that nice!

    To answer your questions:

I usually work out at the gym, but occasionally work out at home. I like to run outside in my neighborhood, and sometimes do a few workouts off of Exercise TV.

I think if you're dedicated, you can get a great workout at home! I'd probably invest in a couple of resistance bands or other inexpensive materials, if you don't have them already.

I did do the "Shred," but not for all 30 days, because I got kinda bored with it…but it's a great quick workout! My bf just got P90X and it is INTENSE! Since I already run and work out at the gym, I've decided to do the P90X workout on Saturday mornings with him – I'll let you know what I think! :)

LOVE the pics. you look so intense! and $16 is a great price. luckily i can use my schools gym for "free" (oh tuition), don't know what i'll do when i graduate!

I do all my running at "home" and use the gym for lifting
Not for lifting. I like having the benches and lots of free weights around.
Not quite sure. I mean, I pay tuition but technically the gym is free. And when I'm not at school I work at a gym which mean free membership
I have tried the Shred but I'm not a fan of video programs in general and Jillian annoys me too much
    Never tried P90X

I workout at a gym, and I feel I get a better workout just because I'm more focused. When I'm at home I will get distracted too much by my roommates or other stuff going on at home, and the choice to quit is too easy. At a gym, you really have to make a point of going, as opposed to putting on a dvd in the living room. However, I do yoga at home sometimes and that's ok. My membership is 50 dollars a month. We don't have all those toilettries provided, but we do have a few, like soap, q-tips, kleenex, hair dryer and a few others. There is a pool, which makes the fee worth it to me. I haven't done the shred, but I've heard good things. I have done a few P-90X videos and they are really kick butt. I'd say they are similar to crossfit.
    Enjoy your weekend!

    - 99% of the time I workout at the gym, but if I go running I go from my house b/c we're only 1.5 miles from the beach :-)
    - If I do workout at home (and haven't gone running), I don't get as good of a workout. I get good ones in, but just not AS good.
    - My gym is $25 a month. The hard part is, around me in CT, there aren't many options. There's one gym I used to go to that I liked a lot, but when it dropped it's prices from $60 a month to $15 it attracted every 16 year old in the County. UGH! Other than where I am now, as far as places with a good atmosphere, there's also Equinox, but that's $150 a month with a $500 signing fee. :-( I wish there was another middle of the road $60 place …
    - I've never done "The Shred"
    - I haven't tried PX90, but anyone I know that's tried it LOVES it!

    1. Used to work out at the gym, but we went down to one car and decided it would be easier if we concentrated on running, at home weights, dvds etc.
    2. I can totally get a kick ass workout at home. it's all about motivation. if no one's around i might not try very hard, or only go for 20 minutes. if my hubby's around and he's working out too, we go super hard core and are sweating up a storm. we usually switch up home workouts with running.
    3. $0 (aside from the occasional DVD I might buy)
    4. Have tried the shred and i liked it. i had to stop due to a shoulder injury (so i could only do running) but i plan on doing it again, aloing with some other great DVD's when my injury has fully healed.

What a great gym you belong to! And what a deal! I don't have a gym membership for the first time since college. We moved into an apartment community that has a fitness center. It's not great, but it works. I prefer to work out on gym equipment that to videos. But I do want to try Jillian's dvds. Someday , I hope to have a couple of gym machines at home. The convenience of working out at home can't be beat!

    1) I do both, but since I'm half marathon training, I have been doing all runs and then on demand stretch/strength things. I am loving training, but I can't wait to get back into kickboxing, spinning, and some jillian dvds.
    2) If I do Jillian dvd's, yes. Also, if running counts, then yes.
    3) $30 a month
    4) Yes and yes, but I didn't do it 30 days straight, I just added it in to my workout schedule around 2-3 times a week. I might actually start over soon. I really like her "No Trouble Zones" and "Boost Your Metabolism" dvd's.
    5) No, I thought about it, but it's really expensive!!

    5. Never done it but the infomericals always make it look cool.
