Good Intentions

Yesterday (Tuesday) when I got home early from work I changed into my workout clothes and cuddled up on the couch while I waited for my workout buddy to get home.  After I gave Dave a hug he immediately said…"I don't feel like working out today"… my response…"me too!"  Problem is we didn't work out Monday either.  We tossed the idea around of not working out again around and decided that it would not be the end of the world if we skipped yet another day.  Dave had four wheeler plow on his mind and I wanted to relax and cook a good dinner.  So we both went our way doing our things.  I decided to make Tofu for the first time. I was pretty excited. I used Caitlin's recipe and was excited to see the outcome.  I cooked some brown rice and an artichoke to go with it.

5 minutes into the cooking of the Tofu, Dave came in and told me he didn't have the tools necessary to put the plow together.  He really wanted to get the tool right then so, out of the oven came the tofu. I wrapped it in foil and put it in the fridge. I'd finish cooking when we got back home.  3 stores and 2 hours later we were back at home with a bag of take out Taco Bell and a tool for the snow plow. Our appetite got the best of us and we caved. I got a grilled chicken gordita and Dave got some crunch soft taco thing.  We ate and then snuggled up on the couch to watch a movie.
I might have accidentally mixed up a batch of these in between cuddling and the movie.

Is it just me or do you eat more brownie/cookie, mix/dough than the actual brownie or cookie? By the time i've baked the stuff I can barley eat one piece. I love the batter!!

I haven't worked out for two days, I ate taco bell for dinner and then topped it off with brownies…when I got home from work, I had good intentions of working out and cooking us a healthy dinner, but then life happend. I guess sometimes good intentions will have to do!

I wrote this post yesterday but didn't get a chance to post it.  Yesterday afternoon Dave and I went for a run. We suited up and ran around the neighborhood for 45 minutes. It felt AMAZING. Not sure if it was the crisp air, or the fact that I haven't run in a while, or that it had been three days since I last worked out…but I was LOVING IT! When we got back home I went out for another 15 minutes because it felt so great!  Sometimes I feel so random with my workouts. I want to be disciplined and stick to something for a certain amount of time, but I guess I get sick of doing the same thing and I crave variety.  I'm beginning to realize that I need variety to stay motivated and excited about exercise.  Doing the same thing all the time is not my recipe for success.

How about you??

ps…the tofu was a BUST! I hated it. I tried to like it and eat it but each bite made me shiver. I even tried to cook it in a different spice, but guys…I just couldn't handle it. I threw it all out.  I don't think tofu is for me unless it looks like a noodle and is found in my Chinese hot and sour soup. Darn…I really wanted to like it.

Did you press it out first? It makes a world of difference. Also, marinating v. spices also would help get the flavors infused in the tofu…

Life does happen and you do have to learn to roll with it or even "healthy habits" become unhealthy.

Tofu is def an aquired taste. I use mine in soups but I don't eat it that often and I like it now….I use more silken tofu in smoothies too.

but again…it takes time…my men will eat it now …but not often. no worries.

and yes, we hit Taco Bell too on the rare occassion. ( I worked there as my first official job in HS) …until a supervisor made a pass at me (I was 14) and freaked out and quit on the spot.

    haha

    crazy life!

oh and I can't make "batter" stuff anymore. I can't stay out of it either!

Tofu is an acquired taste. I was a vegetarian for a while and I couldn't really like it either. The only way that I have found it palatable is fried. That kind of defeats the purpose. I've had one of those weeks too. I have had every good intention to workout and then I end up Christmas shopping or something else comes up at work that I haven't been able to do it. It's wearing heavily on me this week. However, I think Taco Bell would have fixed my mood. Brownies can't hurt either. Maybe tonight I'll be able to get in a workout.

Tofu can be spectacular if prepped right. Pressing is vital! Google "dry-frying tofu." I love this technique, and contrary to its name, minimal oil is needed.

Boo my comment just got deleted!
I think this is a great post! There is no such thing as perfect, and the cold weather is bound to have a negative impact on working out! Two days is nothing, and the more important thing is that you got to spend some quality time with Dave, eat some Taco Bell (every once in awhile never killed anyone), and bake delicious brownies!! YUM! It's the holidays :)

I am 100% with you girl, I have tried to like tofu as well but something about it just doesn't gel with me, something about that texture just makes me unhappy :( Hey, at least we tried though right!

BTW I loved your story about the man and the snow blower machines – I am convinced that all men are obsessed with having the biggest and baddest "toys" and are willing to sacrifice anything to get them (i.e. eating!!!!) — i can totally relate :)

I like reading about real life, sometimes. It's good to keep myself in check when I can't always do the things I planned, and I'm glad it happens to others, too. :-)

Sorry about the tofu fail…at least you can say you tried it, right? Glad about the run, too!

I always eat my weight in batter. I like it so much better than when it's cooked! ;)

Sorry you hated the tofu! Maybe if you tried it in a stir fry mixed with chicken it'd be better. That's the only way i can get my hubby to eat it….

    OMG…I love, LOVE brownie batter! In fact, that's my favorite Ben and Jerry's flavor…brownie batter….Mmmmmm. It's ri-dic-u-lous!

Anyhow, Tofu. Well, the consistency is kinda gross. It's probably best in Asian soups or fried (and then, well, you might as well have a Whopper. But it does taste good then :-) )

Pressing it definitely makes a huge difference! If you don't, it's slimy and nasty even if you cook it. If mine is pressed correctly, It comes out nice and crunchy on the outside if I bake it. I had the best tofu in my Thai food once. It was amazing. I think that it was fried. You can still fry something and it be healthy. You just have to have the oil at the right temperature, have paper towels waiting to blot the excess oil, and mix it with some veggies!
