The Shred

 30 Day Shred

shred

I was not sure what to expect but was super excited to pop it in and find otu! I listened to her intro and decided I would start with level 1 and see what I thought.

Thoughts:
Level 1 was an OK workout, but not enough for me, especially since it is only 20 minutes.  Jillian said…this is only 20 minutes, so if you want to be able to work out for 20 minutes and really see a difference in your body, you have to work really hard.  After the workout I knew that I needed to bump it up to level 2 or 3. I went through and watched both level 2 and 3 and decidedI will do level 3 today and see how it goes. Pretty sure I can handle it for 20 minutes. Plus, I like to feel like I got my butt kicked. Nothing is worse than feeling like you need more or you could have worked harder! I ended up adding on a 2.5 miles fast paced walk afterwards.

Likes:
I love the ciruct training. I like how the workout is set up. 3 minutes of strength, 2 minutes of cardio and 1 minute of abs. I really enjoyed that.  I like that Jillian explains how to do each move properly. I feel comfortable with most exercises but sometimes there is technique that really makes the move more effective, and if I'm going to do something, I want to be doing it right!

I like that she does not allow any breaks. I totally agree with what she says…if you want a 20 minute workout to change your body..YOU HAVE TO WORK HARD.  She kept saying this does not come free. These abs do not come free…etc. I love hearing things like that.  Sometimes I get caught up in looking at other people and wishing for their bodies or muscles or whatever….I have to remember that their toned bodies did not come free, and if I want it I have to work for it! I really like that!

I like that there are a lot of reps in the strength training section. Since there are so many reps, you can use lighter weight but really fatigue the muscle! I can't wait to try level 3…I think it will be perfect!

I like that this is a 30 day program.

Anyone can do it, beginner or advanced. (I'm working on getting my mom and dad to do level 1)

You don't need anything besides hand weights.

Dislikes:
I can see myself getting bored doing the same workout over and over. (I think at 30 days I'll be ready for something new) -I do however think that a repetitive program allows you to see big results in your body since you are working the areas over and over.

Jillian does not recommend using a particular weight for the workouts. I'd like to know a round about number to shoot for instead of guessing. When I am told beginner use X amount of weight, intermediate X amount,  Advanced X  amount…I think it helps me push harder and I end up lifting more and pushing harder. (I found this to be the case with my personal trainer).

Conclusion:
I am SUPER excited to do the 30 day shred. I am excited to try level 3 today and see how that works out.  I think this program is going to give my body some great results.  I am excited to track my progress on the blog and hopefully encourage you to do the same (even if its not with the shred). The holiday season is right around the corner, instead of putting on the lbs…lets get in better shape, lose some LBS (if needed) and keep our bodies moving!! How great will it feel to come away from the holiday season, leaner, meaner (fitness wise) and in better shape!?? Gobble gobble!
I bought my copy of the shred on line for $10! It is super cheap and well worth the money! If you are interested in joining in and doing the Shred with me and don't yet own the Shred, click  30 Day Shred and it will take you to several different Shred DVD's for sale (some as cheap as $7 with free shipping).

not doing the 30 day shred…don't have good place to do video type stuff.
and don't have the video anyway.

I am so glad you brought up the question about the holidays.
Stress is a big hurdle for me now…with the holidays…so YOGA and how about some consistancy (which I stink at)

so how about you do 30 days of kill yourself DVD and I will PROMISE to do 30 days of challenging stretches and a 20 minutes of daily cardio?

will that work? is it 30 days straight?

(I'll do 30 days of shred at the office with the paper)

    I am home today! yeah

    Cindy…
That sounds AWESOME. And i love the paper shredding Idea..that is perfect!! It is not 30 days straight…its 5x a week. so its more like 6 weeks. Ya know? I don't think it matters what fitness we do over the holidays, as long as we stay CONSISTENT, just like you mentioned, and take care of our bodies! hows your husband feeling? Any better?

That sounds pretty awesome! I want to hear more about it! Next time i'm over at mom and dads I want to watch it for a minute to check it out! Love you!!

  5. Morgan on 2009.10.27

Maybe trying doing 2 or 3 of them together as one workout? It's meant to be 10 days at each level, progressing from 1 to 2, then 2 to 3 but if it's not a challenge, then I would definitely do more!

Level 3 is definitely the best in my book! I love the moves she does in this routine, I did it just last night actually :) Level 2 is also pretty challenging, I think they are actually equally as tough and like to switch it up with those. Level 1 is really for a beginner to exercise, which you definitely are not lady, so I am not surprised that it wasn't enough for you (I never do this one)

Can't wait to see how you like level 3 :)

the shred doesn't fit in with my lifestyle right now so i'm not going to do it. i do want to try a workout or two just to see what it's like but definitely don't have any plans to do the whole 30 days

When I first did the Shred (months ago), I really liked what Jillian was saying throughout it, but then it just got annoying hearing everytime. I know you can turn it off and just hear the music, but the music isn't the greatest and when you are doing things on the floor, you need to know when to go to the next workout without focusing only on the tv. All in all, I think it is a good workout and it gives you something new to do.

I did 17 days straight of the shred before I wrecked my ankles on the mountain climbers. BE CAREFUL! I wound up with achilles tendinitis in both ankles and went to physio for 6 weeks for it. That being said, I really did like the set up and the fact that there are "easy" and "hard" versions of all the exercises. Good luck with it!

I have the 30 day shred and I love it. It's a good workout without having to leave your home. Sometimes I tend to get bored with the gym so I like to mix it around. To maintain over the holidays I'm running, hiking and ST 3 times a week.

Great review of the shred! I've done level 1 and 2 many times, but never been brave enough for level 3. I need to try it!! I agree it can get boring, so that's why I've never attempted doing it 30 consecutive days.

I couldn't agree more with your assessment. Level 1 was a bit easy…but I am also excited to try the next levels. I LOVE how there aren't any breaks and it is short, intense workout (much like crossfit) and I like the organization too (the strength, cardio, abs) – thanks for the challenge, I am really excited for the next 28 days!!

  14. Madeline on 2009.10.27

I think level 2 is the hardest! I don't do the workout by itself though, I've always done it in addition to cardio.

hey! thanks for checking out my blog! Good luck with shred! I personally LOVE IT. I agree- level 1 is not hard enough but I like to do level two and three. I think its perfect for when you have hardly any time to workout- it gives you a quick- and GOOD workout in a flash. but when I do have the time- i like to pair Shred with a cardio or something of that sort. I did not do the entire 30 day program- I just do shred when I feel like it haha…good luck!

hey! thanks for checking out my blog ;)
awesome that you are doing shred. I agree- level 1- way to easy. but I love to do level 2 and three. its perfect when you do not have a lot of time to workout because it gives you a quick and GOOD workout! But when I do have time I like to pair it with running or some other type of cardio. good luck with it and have a wonderful night ;)

  19. Cara on 2009.10.28

I agree with you…I thought that level one was a little too easy. I don't really know if I would want to stay with level one for 10 days…may seem a little repetitive and boring, as you said.
